“My goal is to help patients get their quality of life back,” said John Starynski, MD, board certified orthopedic surgeon at Moundview.  “I explain their treatment options and let the patients decide what is best for them.  Surgery isn't always the first choice.  Depending on their condition, I prefer to start conservatively with non-surgical treatments such as pain injections and therapy."

Dr. Starynski has performed over 2,000 hip replacement and over 1,000 knee replacement surgeries during his career.  He joined Moundview’s medical staff last summer when the hospital began offering its own orthopedic surgery program.  The hospital recently added hip and knee replacement surgeries to its list of orthopedic services.

“Most people who need hip or knee replacement have severe, chronic pain that makes it hard for them to walk, get up from a chair, climb stairs or complete other daily activities,” said Dr. Starynski.  “Their pain is often due to osteoarthritis which causes the cartilage that lines the bones in your joints to gradually wear away, resulting in painful bone-on-bone rubbing.  Other reasons for joint replacement include a traumatic break or injury, wear and tear and failure of non-surgical treatments such as pain injections."

“Joint replacement surgeries have over a 95% success rate,” said Dr. Starynski.  “Patients who see the most success are those who are committed to working at their recovery.  They follow through with their rehabilitation and make the changes they need to in order to return to an active lifestyle.”

“Patients can receive as good and in some cases better care locally,” said Maureen Bruce, Quality Director at Moundview Memorial Hospital & Clinics.  “Moundview is monitored for quality measures just like larger facilities.  Our surgical department consistently receives a 99% satisfaction rating from our patients. One of the advantages of having your care at Moundview is the personalized attention you receive.  You are not just a number.”

Prior to joint replacement surgery, patients meet with their physician to discuss the procedure and meet with a physical therapist to develop a customized rehabilitation plan.  The physician and therapist continue to work with the patient on their recovery plan for several weeks following surgery.

Most patients are able to return home within three days post-surgery.  Those who need additional time to recuperate may transfer to Moundview’s short term rehabilitation program upon meeting eligibility requirements.   The program enables eligible patients to remain in the hospital until they are ready for discharge.

Many patients have already experienced the great care and convenience that Moundview's orthopedic surgery program has to offer, including Rich Grabarski.  Dr. Starynski surgically repaired Grabarski’s broken knee cap last fall.

“I had nothing but great care from Dr. Starynski and the emergency room, x-ray, lab, surgery and therapy staff,” said Rich Grabarski.  “I’ve always used Moundview for my medical care.  It’s close to my home, appointments are convenient and wait times are short.”

Mike Fendt, whose collarbone was surgically repaired by Dr. Starynski last winter, shares similar views to Grabarski.  As a physical therapist for over 30 years, she has worked with some of the leading orthopedic surgeons in Wisconsin.  While she could have chosen any one of them for her surgery, she preferred to receive care at Moundview.  2015 mike fendt edited

“At Moundview I was able to schedule several services to be completed in just one day including my orthopedics consult, x-ray and MRI,” said Fendt. “If I had went elsewhere not only would I have had to drive farther, I would have likely had to schedule the appointments over several days.  From a physical therapist’s perspective, I think Dr. Starynski did a fabulous job with my surgery.  He was very precise and thorough.  I feel great and I have my mobility back.  I’ve even started bodysurfing again.”
