Moundview offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient diagnostic procedures to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Emergency procedures are performed as needed. Outpatient services require a physician referral and are scheduled by appointment. Services include:
Laboratory The laboratory's trained technologists use state-of-the-art equipment to perform tests on blood, body fluids and tissues. The lab also provides blood products for patients through our affiliation with The Blood Center of Wisconsin. These services are available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. In addition, lab services are available to physician clinics and to area businesses for employment screenings.
Medical Imaging The medical imaging department is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. A recent expansion to the department in 2005 included a new waiting room, mammography room, bone density scanner/ultrasound room and a general radiology room. The expansion has improved patient privacy and provided space for the latest in diagnostic equipment.
Imaging tests are interpreted by a board certified radiologist. Cardiac imaging tests are interpreted by board certified cardiologists. Available services include:
- Bone density scans Determines your risk for developing osteoporosis
- Computerized Tomography or CT Scan An x-ray technique that produces detailed images of internal organs by taking cross-sectional pictures, like slices, of the inside of the body
- Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) Records the heart's electrical activity
- Echocardiogram Uses sound waves to create images of the heart
- Fluoroscopy Live, moving x-ray images viewed on a TV monitor. Used to observe joints (arthograms) and the digestive tract (upper gastrointestinal and barium enema).
- Mammography Detects abnormalities in the breast
- Nuclear medicine Measures blood flow to an organ or bone. Radioactive materials are injected into the patient and a gamma camera is used to scan the area of interest.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI Uses radio waves and magnetic fields to create cross-sectional pictures of the body
- Ultrasound Uses sound waves to create images of structures in the body
- X-ray
Other Diagnostic Procedures Diagnostic tests performed in other departments include:
- Colonoscopy An exam of the entire colon and rectum using a colonoscope (a flexible tube with a small camera) which allows the physician to look for abnormalities on a TV screen
- Gastroscopy An exam of the stomach, using a scope, allowing the physician to look for abnormalities on a TV screen.
- Pulmonary Function Determines a patient's lung capacity/abilities
- Stress Tests Measures blood flow to the heart. A treadmill stress test measures the effect of exercise on your heart. A nuclear stress test is similar to a treadmill test, except the patient is injected with a radioactive substance. Pictures are then taken of the heart while at rest and while exercising.
- Electroencephalogram or EEG Measures brain activity
